When planning stage lighting, especially when cameras are rolling, getting adequate light is essential.
First, a footcandle (FC) is a unit that measures how much light actually reaches a surface—like your stage. One footcandle equals the light of one lumen per square foot. So while “lumens” describe the total light a fixture produces, footcandles tell us how much of that light is usable on the stage.
For clean, professional-looking video with modern cameras, you generally need around 60–70 footcandles at the presenter or performer’s position. Occasionally, ambient light can already provide this, but often not. For a really well-lit stage that “pops” both in person and on camera, we recommend 120-200 footcandles of even wash lighting across the stage area. This is the standard in most theater and corporate settings today.
Stage lighting isn’t just about brightness; it’s about control. Need to fade lights smoothly for a video or cue transitions between presentations? A lighting rig lets you do that seamlessly. Want color ambiance between sessions? Change hues at the press of a button. Stage lights also provide consistent coverage focused only on the stage, unlike room lights, which are often uneven, flicker-prone, mismatched in color temperature, and can cause issues on camera.
We offer on-site light level readings and light analysis as part of our site visits. Using a light meter, we’ll measure how much illumination your stage area naturally receives, or how much the room lighting does for it, and let you know if additional lighting is necessary. This helps avoid guesswork and ensures your event looks great.
